The Zaharia House (Casa Zaharia) is a historic residence in Focșani, dating from the 19th century and distinguished by its elaborate eclectic architecture. Originally built for the Zaharia family, it later belonged to Gheorghe Tomulescu, a lawyer and former prefect of Putna County, before being converted into a children’s institution during the Communist period.
Following nationalization in 1950, the residence was used as a children’s home and subsequently housed Kindergarten No. 11. The building deteriorated over the following decades, and concerns about its condition eventually prompted the closure of the kindergarten in 2016. After returning to private ownership, plans were announced in 2022 to restore the house and convert it into a restaurant with accommodation, but the project was not carried out, and the property was advertised for sale again in 2025.
The single-story house has an eclectic design, with a projecting polygonal entrance section and an unusual curved pediment supported by small masonry brackets. Above the entrance rises a bulb-shaped roof feature, while the facade is decorated with ornamental stucco, including a coat of arms framed by vegetal motifs. These details give the former residence a distinctive appearance among Focșani’s historic houses.
