The Lake Bâlea viewpoint is the highest and most famous viewpoint on the Transfăgărășan, looking down over the dramatic series of hairpin bends on the northern side of the Făgăraș Mountains in Sibiu County.
From the area around Lake Bâlea and the upper cable-car station, a short walk toward the edge of the plateau opens up the classic view down the pass. The road twists sharply across the mountainside far below, with steep slopes, rocky ridges and the deep valley giving the scene a dramatic sense of scale.
This is the place where many visitors stop simply to take in the panorama and the high-mountain atmosphere. The changing light, drifting clouds and exposed position can make the view feel different from one moment to the next, while the sweeping perspective over the road below makes it one of the defining experiences of the Transfăgărășan.
