The Millennium Church (Biserica Millennium), located in the Fabric district of Timișoara, is the largest Roman Catholic church in the city. The church, which is officially named the “Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven,” was built in honor of the 1,000th anniversary of the formation of the Hungarian state, hence the name Millennium Church.
The church was designed by the architect Ludwig von Ybl from Budapest and the construction took place under the supervision of Josef Kremer from 1896 until 1901, when it was consecrated on October 13th. The new church was built to replace the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary near the Timișoreana Brewery because it had become too small. The old parish church was donated to the Romanian-Greek Catholic Church and is now called the Church of the Nativity of Mary.
The Millennium Church is built in neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic styles for which almost 4 million bricks were used. It has a length of 71.12 meters and a width of 27.5 meters and the two towers each reach a height of 65.7 meters. The church offers a capacity of 3,000 people.
