The Holy Trinity Statue (Monumentul Sfintei Treimi), also called the Plague Column (Coloana Ciumei), is a monument on Union Square (Piața Unirii) in the old town of Timișoara.
The monument was created by the sculptor Georg Raphael Donner between 1739 and 1740 to commemorate the end of the plague, an epidemic that killed more than 1,300 people in Timișoara between 1731 and 1738 and many more across the Banat region. The statue was initially placed in front of Deschan Palace, where the Bega Shopping Center is now located. In 1755 the monument was moved to its current location on the city’s central square, at the request of Empress Maria Theresa.
The Holy Trinity Statue is a triangular column placed on a small base that is decorated with volutes and reliefs. Statues of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Saint, the Son, and the Father holding the heavenly crown above the head of the Virgin Mary are placed on top of the column. At the bottom, statues depicting the saints John of Nepomuk, Barbara, and Francis Xavier are placed. On the pedestal of the monument stand the statues of Saint Sebastian pierced by arrows, Saint Roch with his wounded leg, and Saint Charles Borromeo. On the three sides, bas-reliefs can be seen depicting the three biggest calamities that had hit the Banat region: war, famine, and the plague.
