The White Tower (Turnul Alb) is a historic watch and defense tower and forms a part of the fortifications of the citadel of Brașov.
The White Tower was built between 1460 and 1494 out of brick and stone. The tower is a semicircular plan with a diameter of 19 meters and walls that are 4 meters thick at the base. The walls are equipped with ramparts, pitch mouths, and balconies supported by corbels. The tower has 5 floors and a height varying between 18 and 20 meters because it’s located against the slope of a hill, about 59 meters away from the city wall.
From 1678 the White Tower was guarded by the tinners’ guild. When the great fire of Brașov broke out on 21 April 1689, the strong wind caused the tower to catch fire as well. The damaged tower was renovated again in 1723, followed by more renovations in 1902, 1874, 2002, and between 2005-2006. The tower is now a small museum.
