The Postal Palace (Palatul Poștei) is the historic main post office of Sibiu, housed in an ornate early-20th-century building in the historic center.
Sibiu’s postal and telegraph services were brought together in the late 19th century, when the telegraph office moved to the existing post office on Strada Mitropoliei in 1886. As these services expanded, the older premises became too limited, and a much larger purpose-built headquarters was constructed nearby. The new post office opened in 1904, occupying two medieval plots at the corner of Strada Mitropoliei and Strada Poștei.
The building was designed to give the growing postal service a much stronger civic presence. Its corner is emphasized by a high roof and projecting façade section, while four large arches dominate the ground floor facing Strada Mitropoliei. Above them, rectangular windows, pediments, urns, masks and Neo-Gothic details create a richly decorated façade that is quite different from the older houses surrounding it.
Several details refer directly to the building’s original purpose and are worth looking for from the street. A sundial appears among the decoration, while one relief shows a young woman receiving a letter from a pigeon while using a telephone, combining older and newer forms of communication in a single scene.
More than a century after it opened, the building still serves as Sibiu’s central post office.
