The Museum of Contemporary Art (Muzeul de Artă Contemporană) is the contemporary-art branch of the Brukenthal National Museum, housed in a historic building on Strada Tribunei in Sibiu.
The building dates from 1901 and served several cultural institutions before becoming part of the Brukenthal museum network. In 2006 it was taken over as the museum’s Contemporary Art Gallery, creating a dedicated space for newer Romanian art outside the historic collections of Brukenthal Palace. The gallery was reorganized and expanded over the following years, and in 2014 it formally became the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Temporary exhibitions occupy the ground floor, while the upper levels include a visitable storage collection introduced in 2014. Rather than presenting only a conventional permanent exhibition, this space allows visitors to see paintings, sculptures, tapestries and other works in a setting that combines gallery display with museum storage. A further temporary exhibition room was added in 2019.
The museum focuses primarily on contemporary Romanian art and regularly hosts changing exhibitions, curatorial projects and events. As part of the Brukenthal National Museum, it provides a modern counterpart to the institution’s much older European and Romanian art collections elsewhere in Sibiu.
