The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of Timișoara (Catedrala Orthodoxa Mitropolitană din Timișoara) is a Romanian-Orthodox church, located in Cathedral Park in Timișoara. The beautiful church is one of the most iconic sights in the city and looks out on Victory Square in the historic center.
The history of the church goes back to 1919 when Banat and Romania were united after the fall of the catholic Austrian-Hungarian empire. The new Romanian administration wanted to encourage Orthodoxy and created a new Bishopric, which was later turned into an archbishopric in 1939. To fulfill the need for a place of worship the Metropolitan Cathedral was built in 1936 and completed in 1940 and in 1947 the Metropolis of Banat was established.
The church was built in the neo-Moldavian style with elements of Renaissance, Ottoman, and Byzantine architecture. The structure is 63 meters long and 32 meters wide and has an internal height of 52 meters while the exterior reaches 83 meters in height.
The cathedral also houses a collection of religious art, including church books, religious icons, paintings, clothing, relics, and ornaments. Some early writings in Romanian are also kept inside the cathedral.
