The Oradea State Theater (Teatrul de Stat din Oradea) is a historic theater building housing the Queen Maria Theater and the Szigligeti Theater. It is located on King Ferdinand I Square in Oradea, Bihor County.
The theater was built as the Municipal Theater of Oradea between 1899 and 1900. The building was designed by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner Jr. and Hermann Helmer and the project was realized under the supervision of Kálmán Rimanóczy sr., József Guttmann, and Vilmos Rendes. Initially, plays were only held in the Hungarian language, but on 9 October 1927, the first performance in the Romanian language took place.
The Oradea State Theater has an Eclectic style with a historic Greek facade with Ionic columns and a pediment which is decorated with bas-reliefs. The stairs in front of the entrance are flanked by two sculptures depicting the Greek muses Melpomene (representing tragedy) and Thalia (representing comedy), which were brought from Budapest. The interior of the theater is dominated by a neo-Baroque style and has three performance halls: the Grand Hall with 650 seats, the Arcadia Room with 200 seats, and the Studio Room with 50 seats.
Currently, the Oradea State Theater houses two theater companies: the Queen Mary Theater (Teatrul Regele Maria), which performs in Romanian, and the Szigligeti Theater (Teatrul Szigligeti) which performs in Hungarian.
