The George & Agatha Bacovia Memorial House (Casa Memorială George și Agatha Bacovia) is the former residence of the famous Romanian poet George Bacovia (1881-1957) and his wife Agatha in Bucharest. The house is now a museum dedicated to the poet which is administered by the National Museum of Romanian Literature.
About George Bacovia
George Bacovia was born Gheorghe Vasiliu on 17 September 1881 in Bacău, where he also grew up and went to school, until he started studying at the Faculty of Law in Bucharest. This is also when he made his first impression as a writer with the poem called “Plumb”, which means “Lead”.
He later moved to IaÈ™i where he obtained his law degree and qualified for the bar, but he never practiced law and continued writing poetry instead. His talent didn’t go unnoticed and he became one of the most important interwar poets of Romania.
In 1933, George Bacovia settled in Bucharest together with his wife Agatha Grigorescu, and their only son, Gabriel. His wife was able to obtain a loan with which the house was built within a month. When Bacovia died on 22 May 1957, he was buried at the Șerban Vodă Cemetery in Bucharest. With the help of his wife Agathe, the house became a museum one year later. The memorial house is now under the coordination of the National Museum of Romanian Literature.
