The Military Heroes Monument (Monumentul Eroilor Militari) is a monument in the Youth Park in Bucharest that commemorates all soldiers fallen on duty. The official name of the monument is the “Monument to the Heroes Fallen in Theaters of Operation” (Monumentul Eroilor Militari CăzuÅ£i în Teatre de OperaÅ£ii).
The monument is the work of the Romanian sculptor Valentin Tănase and consists of a round granite base and two tall pillars. On the front of the base are two panels with the names of soldiers who died on duty, which include missions in Romania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Iraq, and Afghanistan. On the back of the base, several military scenes have been sculptured.
Whether the location was chosen on purpose or not, the monument stands right in front of the Children’s Palace and is therefore a great reminder that today’s children grow up in a free country because of people’s bravery.
