The Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Universitatea de Medicină și Farmacie Carol Davila), or UMFCD, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the field of health sciences in Romania. The university uses facilities of over 20 clinical hospitals in Bucharest, but its main location is the historic building on Bulevardul Eroii Sanitari.
The building was designed by the Swiss architect Louis Pierre Blanc and constructed between 1899 and 1903. The university has a French Academic style with an imposing central body that features a large portico supported by Corinthian columns. The pediment above the entrance is decorated with various sculptures. The style of the imposing building had a significant influence on the development of the surrounding Cotroceni neighborhood.
In front of the university building stands a statue of Carol Davila, the founder of the National School of Medicine and Pharmacy which was later renamed Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in his honor. The statue was cast in bronze by the famous artist Karl Storck.
