The Bâlea Cable Car (Telecabina Bâlea) connects the Bâlea Waterfall area with Lake Bâlea in the Făgăraș Mountains, climbing from the lower station beside the Transfăgărășan to the high mountain area at 2,034 meters. The route covers about 3.7 kilometers and takes roughly 15 minutes.
The lower station is located beside Cabana Bâlea Cascadă, the artisan market and the starting point of the hiking trail toward the Bâlea Waterfall. From there, the cable car rises steeply above the Bâlea Valley, passing from forested slopes into the open alpine landscape around the lake.
The ride offers broad views across the Bâlea Valley as the cable car climbs above the forest and into the open alpine landscape. Each cabin carries up to 14 passengers, who stand together inside rather than traveling in separate gondolas, so the cabin can feel crowded when services are busy.
The cable car is especially important outside the summer road season. When snow closes the high section of the Transfăgărășan, it becomes the main way to reach Lake Bâlea, the surrounding accommodation and the seasonal Ice Hotel from the northern side of the mountains.
During the warmer months, the cable car also provides an alternative to driving the steep upper section of the Transfăgărășan and is useful for hikers traveling between the lower Bâlea Valley and the lake area. More information about the actual operating hours and tickets can be found on the website of the operator.
