Iași Train Station is the main passenger railway station in Iași, in Iași County in eastern Romania. It is one of the oldest and busiest train stations in Romania and is located in the western part of the city.
History Of Iași Train Station
In the first half of the 19th century, it was proposed to build a rail connection between Iași, at the time the capital of the Principality of Moldavia, with the ports of the Danube River. However, due to a lack of financing the construction only started after the unification of Moldavia with Wallachia in 1859. In 1870 the Pașcani-Iași line was inaugurated, which connected the city to the railway line between Suceava, which was located at the Austro-Hungarian border at the time, and the Danube ports of Galați and Brăila, and the capital Bucharest in Muntenia.
The train station building, which was designed by the Autro-Hungarian architect Julian Oktawian Zachariewicz-Lwigród, was inaugurated at the same time as one of the first passenger railway stations in Romania. The design of the building was inspired by Doge’s Palace in Venice and had a length of 134 meters and consisted of 113 rooms. Between 1928 and 1930 two additional wings were added, one on each side of the building. The building is now a cultural monument.
