CFR Călători is the largest operator of passenger train connections in Romania. It is the passenger services subsidiary of Căile Ferate Române (CFR), the national railway company that also operates freight services and manages the railway infrastructure. The company is located at the Ministry of Transportation in Bucharest, opposite the Bucharest North Train Station, the largest railway hub in Romania.
Railway Routes
Romania has an extensive nationwide railway network and CFR Călători is the only passenger carrier operating at a national level, offering direct and indirect train connections between all major cities, and many smaller towns, and villages in Romania.
CFR Călători operates two types of domestic trains:
- Regio (R): Slower, regional or commuter trains that connect smaller towns and villages with larger cities and with each other. These trains stop at every station, usually only have second class compartments, but have the lowest ticket fairs.
- InterRegio (IR): Faster, medium and long-distance trains that only stop in towns and cities. All trains have first and second class compartments, free wifi, and most long-distance services also offer sleeping cars, couchettes, and dining cars.
CFR Călători also collaborates with foreign national railway carriers to offer international routes.
Departure Information
Train schedules and real-time arrival and departure information for trains operated by CFR Călători can be found on the digital screens available at most train stations, via the official website of CFR Călători and their mobile app.
Buying Train Tickets
Train tickets can be purchased in person at the ticket offices or ticket machines at the train stations, via the official website of CFR Călători, their mobile app, or from authorized travel agents. In certain exceptions, tickets can also be purchased onboard the train, for example when no ticket selling point is available at a train station, and onboard the train between Bucharest and the airport.
