Weather & Climate
Located in the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, this park features a transitional landscape of rolling hills, dense old-growth forests, and wide, meandering river valleys. This topography creates a gentle, temperate climate where the forests act as a massive moisture regulator, maintaining high humidity and moderate temperatures that protect the park’s famous European bison population from extreme heat or sudden, harsh mountain weather shifts.
Summer (June-August): The forested landscape is a lush, cooling retreat with daytime temperatures averaging 20°C to 26°C. The thick canopy provides excellent natural shade, making this the prime season for tracking wildlife, visiting the local monasteries, and hiking the well-maintained trails that weave through the deep, ancient woodlands.
Spring and Autumn: These are seasons of vivid color and quiet atmosphere. Spring (April–May) awakens the park with fresh greenery and blooming meadows, with temperatures of 12°C to 18°C. Autumn (September–October) is the standout season for photography, as the vast deciduous forests turn brilliant shades of gold and red with cool, crisp temperatures between 9°C and 15°C providing stable conditions for long walks.
Winter (December-March): The park becomes a serene, snow-laden sanctuary with temperatures typically ranging from -5°C to 3°C. The forest floor often holds a thick snowpack, which is ideal for observing bison as they congregate near feeding stations. While main access roads are cleared, the forest trails can become deep with snow, making this an ideal time for snowshoeing or experiencing the quiet, dramatic beauty of the winter woods.
