The Franciscan Monastery of Făgăraș (Mănăstirea Franciscană din Făgăraș) is a Roman Catholic monastery and church in the historic center of Făgăraș. Founded by the Franciscan order in 1737, the complex developed as an important religious and educational center and remains one of the city’s major Baroque monuments.
A school was established beside the monastery in 1747, but much of the complex was destroyed by a major fire that swept through Făgăraș in 1760. The church, monastery and school all suffered severe damage, and reconstruction began the following year. The present appearance of the complex largely dates from this rebuilding, which gave the church and monastery the form they retain today.
Inside the church, several elements survived or were restored after the fire. The main altar preserves part of the earlier Baroque furnishing and includes life-size gilded wooden figures, while the pulpit is crowned by a statue of Saint Michael. An organ with 18 registers was installed in 1895, adding another important feature to the interior.
The monastery buildings enclose an inner courtyard, where two historic sundials can still be seen. One surviving fresco also remains from the decoration of the former refectory, offering a glimpse of the artistic character the monastic spaces once had.
The complex continues to serve the Roman Catholic community of Făgăraș and is still commonly known locally as the Church of the Fathers (Biserica Paterilor), a name that reflects the long presence of the Franciscan friars in the city.
