The Dr. Nicolae Robitu House (Casa Dr. Nicolae Robitu) is an Art Nouveau residence built in 1900 in central Brăila. It is one of the city’s early examples of this architectural style and takes its name from surgeon Nicolae Robitu (1907-1997), who later owned the property.
The house differs from Brăila’s more traditionally decorated nineteenth-century residences through its flowing lines and plant-inspired ornamentation. Branches, leaves, and floral reliefs spread across the facade between the windows, while curved window frames and decorative ironwork follow the characteristic forms of Art Nouveau. Its design drew on architectural developments in Western Europe, where the style was becoming increasingly popular around the turn of the twentieth century.
Nicolae Robitu was born in Ianca, in Brăila County, and studied at Nicolae Bălcescu High School before completing his medical education in Cluj. He returned to Brăila to work as a surgeon, but his career was interrupted in May 1948 when he was arrested by the communist authorities. During his imprisonment, he tried to help fellow prisoners despite having no proper medical equipment or medication, sometimes using improvised instruments to treat infections.
After his release in 1953, Robitu was prevented from returning to his former hospital position. He was imprisoned again in the late 1950s and released in 1962, after which he was permitted to work only as a district physician in Brăila.
The house was later sold by one of Robitu’s sons and restored under the supervision of engineer Iulian Troacă. The restoration preserved its distinctive floral decoration, window details, and ornamental ironwork, allowing the building to retain its early Art Nouveau appearance.
