The Paul Păltănea History Museum (Muzeul de Istorie „Paul Păltănea” Galați) is the main history museum of Galați County, located in the historic center of Galați. Its collections document the archaeology and history of the Lower Danube region from prehistory through the modern period.
History
The museum developed from several local collections assembled in Galați before a permanent institution existed. Historian Vasile Alexandrescu Urechia created a small museum alongside the city’s public library in 1890, while Paul and Ecaterina Pașa established another mixed collection in 1913.
A permanent museum opened in 1939 at the Cuza family house, where material relating to Alexandru Ioan Cuza was presented alongside objects from the wider history of Galați and the surrounding region. After World War II, the collections expanded through transfers from the V.A. Urechia Library, new acquisitions and increasingly systematic archaeological research across Galați County. During the following decades, the museum developed into the county’s principal history institution and gradually added specialist branches and exhibition spaces. It adopted the name of historian Paul Păltănea in 2014.
Collections and Exhibitions
The museum brings together archaeological finds and historical objects that trace the development of Galați County and the Lower Danube from the earliest settlements to the 20th century. Its archaeological holdings include prehistoric pottery and tools, Bronze Age objects, Geto-Dacian finds, Roman material from sites such as Tirighina-Bărboși and objects recovered from medieval settlements across the county.
Later history is represented through coins, medals, weapons, military equipment, documents, photographs, decorative arts, clothing and objects from everyday life. These collections are used in temporary and thematic exhibitions exploring subjects such as local archaeology, military history, trade, domestic life, prominent Galați families and the development of the city as a Danube port.
The museum also administers several specialist museums in Galați and elsewhere in the county. The Cuza Vodă House Museum focuses on Alexandru Ioan Cuza, his family and 19th-century domestic life, while the Galați Lapidarium presents regional archaeological finds and ethnography. The House of Collections Museum combines the restored former Ținc Pharmacy with exhibitions on subjects including local history, old books, medals, Smaranda Brăescu and the European Commission of the Danube.
