The Ștefan Procopiu Science and Technology Museum (Muzeul Științei și Tehnicii Ștefan Procopiu) is one of the museums that make up the Moldavia National Museum Complex of Iași and one of the four museums housed in the Palace of Culture in Iași. The other museums are the History Museum of Moldavia, the Ethnographic Museum of Moldavia, and the Art Museum of Iași.
History Of The Museum
The museum was established in 1955 at the initiative of a friendly group of teachers and professors and was initially called the Polytechnic Museum. The first section of the museum was about energetics and opened its doors on 1 March 1961. In 1966, a sound and recording section was added and over the years more objects were collected to grow the museum to what it is today. In 1994, the museum was renamed after Ștefan Procopiu in honor of his contributions to science in Iași.
Museum Collection And Exhibits
The museum has several themed sections, including musical instruments, telecommunication, energy, sound recording and playback, and computers. The museum is great for seeing the origins of some of the technologies we still use in our everyday lives and for some people it’s a real trip down memory lane.
Among the collection are some beautiful music boxes, musical instruments like organs and gramophones, rotary dial phones and a switchboard, the first electric street lights, cameras, typewriters, microchips and the first personal computers with various accessoires.
Visiting The Museum
To visit the museum you can buy an individual ticket for the museum alone, or get a combi ticket for all four museums and access to the other rooms of the Palace of Culture, including the Hall of the Voivodes and the Henri Coandă Hall.
