Matache Market (PiaÈ›a Matache) is a local market on PiaÅ£a Haralambie Botescu along Strada Berzei in Bucharest. The nearest tram stop is ‘BuzeÈ™ti’ which is just around the corner but the Bucharest North Train Station is also at walking distance and connects with the M1 and M4 metro lines.
The history of the market goes back to the 19th century, when the intersection, which was on the outskirts of the city at that time, started attracting merchants selling their products. Among them was Loloescu Matache who set up his famous butcher shop there. In 1879 a market hall was built on the square.
Nowadays, the Matache Market consists of a main indoor market hall and several small shops along the pedestrian street surrounding the hall. Inside the central hall are mainly shops selling clothes, shoes, and household times. Around the central hall, there’s a fruit and vegetables hall, a dairy hall, some kiosks, and some specialty shops including a bakery, a patisserie, a butcher, and a fish shop. There’s also a grill bar to grab a bite when you’re hungry.
