Bazilescu Park (Parcul Bazilescu) is an urban park in the BucureÈ™tii Noi neighborhood in the north-west of Bucharest. The park is connected to the M4 metro line via the ‘Parc Bazilescu’ metro station.
History Of Bazilescu Park
The history of Bazilescu Park dates back to 1954 and initially consisted of an area of 120 hectares. It used to be named the Nicolae Bălcescu Park, but it was later named after the university professor Nicolae Bazilescu, who donated the land to the state. With the development of the suburbs and the Bucureștii Noi neighborhood, the park has been reduced to 12.5 hectares. In 2004, the city hall redeveloped and modernized the park with a €1 million investment.
What To See And Do In Bazilescu Park
The park is landscaped with walking paths, grass fields, flowers, and trees, including some very old trees dating back to when the area was still a forest. The park is great for a walk, to go jogging, or to take your kids to play or go for a picnic, as there is plenty of shade to hide from the sun.
Bazilescu Amfitheater
In the middle of the park stands the Bazilescu Amfitheater, which is an open air summer theater. It was built in 1953 and inaugurated on the occasion of the World Festival of Youth and Students and had a capacity for 2000 spectators. Unfortunately, the theater is now in an advanced state of decay and no longer in use.
Monuments
Along the main alley running up to the theater are the bustes of Nicolae Bălcescu and Nicolae Bazilescu.
