Heroes Square (Piața Eroilor) is a public square in front of the Carol I National Defence University (Universitatea Națională de Apărare Carol I), on the southern end of Heroes Boulevard (Bulevardul Eroilor) in Bucharest. The square is flanked by Doctor Dumitru Bagdasar Street and Professor Doctor Francisc Iosif Rainer Street.
The Carol I National Defence University was founded in 1889 as the Higher War School. In 1948 it was renamed High Military Studies Academy and in 2005 it received its current name. The current building on Heroes Square was built between 1937 and 1939 after the design by the architect Duiliu Marcu.
In front of the university stands the Monument to the Heroes of the Motherland (Monumentul Eroilor Patriei), which was inaugurated in 1957. The monument consists of a statutary group of soldiers of three different branches of the army: infantry, navy, and aviation, all cast in bronze. The ensemble stands on a concrete plinth covered by Moneasa marble. In front of the monument is a row of 6 fountains on both sides of the square.
On weekends, Heroes Square is home to a small market where local vendors sell fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, honey, and other local produce, and clothes, antiques and other souvenirs.
