Novotel Bucharest City Center is a modern hotel on Victory Avenue in central Bucharest. Although the hotel is a modern building, its facade is a reminder of the past, when it was the location of the National Theater.
On the location of the current Novotel hotel, there used to be the Filaret Inn, founded by the metropolitan Filaret. In the middle of the 19th century, the inn was demolished after it was damaged beyond repair by an earthquake. Between 1847 and 1952 the Grand Theater of Bucharest was constructed in its place, which was designed in a baroque style by the Viennese architect A. Hefft. In 1875, the theater was renamed National Theater.
On 24 August 1944, the German air force bombarded Bucharest which completely destroyed the historic theater. Later, the completely new National Theater Bucharest was built 500 meters away on University Square.
On the site of the old theater, the current Novotel hotel was built, but as a reminder of the past, the facade of the old theater was reconstructed at the entrance of the hotel. The historic theater also features on the current banknote of 100 lei.
Novotel Bucharest City Center is a modern 4-star luxury hotel with a restaurant, meeting rooms, and a wellness center with an indoor pool. Check out the rooms and rates here.
