The Former Focșani Commercial School (Fosta Școală Comercială din Focșani) is a historic school building in Focșani, constructed between 1925 and 1929 to provide commercial and vocational education for students from the city and surrounding Putna County.
The school was established through the initiative of the Focșani Chamber of Commerce, particularly its president Vasile C. Antonescu, who organized financial contributions from local merchants and businessmen. The municipality donated a large plot of land for the new building, and construction began on July 26, 1925, according to plans prepared by architect Simion Vasilescu. Mihail Goilav served as the construction architect, while Vasilescu and F. Hamel supervised the work. The school was inaugurated in 1927, although construction continued until 1929.
The institution offered commercial education to students from Focșani and smaller towns and villages in the surrounding region, providing scholarships, boarding accommodation, and a dining hall. Following the education reform of 1948, the commercial school was closed and the building was converted into a residential institution for orphans and other people requiring social assistance. It later passed into the use of a local industrial and public services enterprise. After the collapse and reorganization of that enterprise following the Romanian Revolution, the property passed into private ownership and underwent a prolonged period of deterioration.
The large building was designed in the Neo-Romanian style, with two main floors and an attic beneath a steep roof. Its substantial facade combines symmetrical proportions with traditional Romanian architectural details, while the original interior contained spacious classrooms arranged around corridors and a staircase built from wood and wrought iron. With approximately 1,400 square meters of floor space, it was designed to accommodate both teaching facilities and the supporting functions of a regional commercial school.
