The Tănăsescu House (Casa Tănăsescu) is a historic residence on Bulevardul Gării in Focșani, built in 1896 for Armenian merchant Neculai Ștefan. Also known as Cristoff Garabet House, it takes its present name from the Tănăsescu family, who owned the property for several decades. The restored building now houses a private dental clinic.
Neculai Ștefan commissioned the residence in 1896, replacing several older buildings on his property with a substantial brick house. After his death in 1899, his widow Florența continued to live there, with a property inventory from 1902 describing six rooms, several entrance halls, a glazed corridor, a balcony, and service rooms. Before her death, she bequeathed the property to a relative, Cristof Garabet, an Armenian magistrate who served as a counselor at Romania’s High Court of Cassation and Justice. The house subsequently passed through another owner before being purchased around 1939 by merchant Constantin Tănăsescu, whose family retained it throughout the Communist period. Among its later residents was mathematics teacher Constantin Tănăsescu, who became a respected figure in Focșani’s educational life.
The single-story house has an elevated ground floor and an architectural design influenced by classical European styles. Its main entrance projects slightly from the facade beneath a decorative pediment, with an ornamental arch, floral motifs, and a coat of arms above the doorway. The entrance is framed by columns with composite capitals, while the double wooden doors have a semicircular upper section. A second entrance on the eastern side is decorated with a stucco lion’s head, and the interior was originally organized around a central hallway with rooms on either side.
The house was later restored and reopened in June 2026 as the DentExcel Professor Tănăsescu dental clinic, named after the mathematics teacher who had lived and taught there.
