The Luceafărul Theater (Teatrul Luceafărul) is a theater for children and young audiences in central Iași, housed in a distinctive modern building completed in 1987. Its program includes puppet theater, plays, music, dance, and performances for different age groups, while its annual International Theater Festival for Young Audiences brings companies and artists from Romania and abroad to the city.
The institution was founded on March 1, 1950, as the Iași State Puppet Theater, initially performing in a small former cinema in the courtyard of the Old Catholic Cathedral. Its productions began with traditional fairy tales and children’s stories, but the repertoire gradually expanded to include adaptations of Romanian and international literature, music, pantomime, and other forms of performance. In 1973, this broader artistic direction was reflected in its new name, the Theater for Children and Youth.
When the earthquake of 1977 damaged its original premises, the company moved temporarily to the Youth Culture House. Plans for a purpose-built theater were already being developed, and construction began in 1978 under a team of architects including Victor Tăușan, Dan Vișan, Dan Andrei, and Adrian Popovici. Financial shortages delayed the project for several years, but the building was eventually completed and inaugurated on December 30, 1987. The theater also adopted the name Luceafărul, taken from Mihai Eminescu‘s celebrated poem.
The new building was designed around a hexagonal auditorium, allowing different arrangements of the stage and audience. Its main hall seats approximately 450 spectators and incorporates a movable central stage, while a smaller auditorium accommodates around 150 people. The concrete structure is finished with travertine and Rușchița marble, and a metal emblem above the entrance combines a theatrical mask with a lyre.
Luceafărul stages productions for preschool children, families, teenagers, and adults, drawing on fairy tales, classic literature, and contemporary writing. Its program includes adaptations of works by Ion Creangă, whose The Purse with Two Pennies (Punguța cu doi bani) has been one of the theater’s longest-running productions.
The theater also organizes the International Theater Festival for Young Audiences (Festivalul Internațional de Teatru pentru Publicul Tânăr), which brings visiting theater companies and a varied program of performances to Iași each autumn.
