The Balș House (Casa Balș) is a historic residence in central Galați, built in 1913-1915 for a member of the Balș family. Its unusual French-inspired design, decorative family crest and long later use as the Bulevard restaurant make it one of the more distinctive houses along Strada Domnească.
The property was acquired in 1913 together with older buildings that were subsequently replaced by the present residence. By 1922, the house had passed to engineer I.D. Popovici, chief engineer at the Galați shipyards, who used it as a private residence until the property was nationalized after World War II.
Built perpendicular to the street, the house has a distinctly French-inspired layout. A central hall was lit from above through a glazed ceiling, while the principal salon faced the street through three tall openings, including a central door-window leading onto a wrought-iron balcony. A glazed corridor extended toward the family and service rooms, kitchens and storage spaces.
Much of the exterior decoration is concentrated on the street-facing end of the building, where exposed brick, stone moldings and pediments frame the windows. Above the large salon windows, a stucco relief displays the Balș family arms, while seven- and eight-pointed star motifs appear among the decorative details.
During the communist period, the house became the Bulevard restaurant, a well-known dining venue in Galați, and it retained a restaurant function for some time after 1990 under the administration of the Chamber of Commerce. The property was later returned to the heirs of the Popovici family and passed into private ownership.
