The Craiova Administrative Palace (Palatul Administrativ din Craiova) is a monumental Neo-Romanian building overlooking Michael the Brave Square in the center of Craiova. Designed by architect Petre Antonescu in the early 20th century, the palace is distinguished by its richly ornamented façades, green glazed-tile roofs, and prominent clock tower, and serves as the headquarters of the Dolj County Prefecture and County Council.
The palace was commissioned to provide a new headquarters for the county administration and built on land formerly belonging to the Hagiade family. Construction took place during the early 1900s under the supervision of Giovanni Battista Peressutti, an Italian engineer who subsequently worked on several other prominent buildings in Craiova. The project also transformed the surrounding area, replacing older buildings with a new civic square that gave the palace a commanding position in the city center.
Petre Antonescu combined the monumental proportions of a European administrative palace with elements inspired by Romanian medieval architecture. The façades feature arched windows, carved stone ornamentation, projecting balconies, and open loggias, while steep roofs and varied gables create an elaborate silhouette. Inside, a grand ceremonial staircase leads to the upper floors beneath an ornate dome. The building originally contained 106 rooms, accommodating administrative offices, reception halls, and a residence for the prefect.
In 1915, part of the palace became home to the Museum of Antiquities and Ethnography of Oltenia, an early predecessor of the Oltenia Museum. During the German occupation of Craiova in the First World War, the building was requisitioned for military railway administration, and its furnishings and museum collections suffered considerable damage. Further structural problems developed during the 20th century, including serious damage during the 1977 earthquake. Subsequent reconstruction and restoration work preserved the palace’s historic architecture and its original administrative function.
