The Lipscani Passage (Pasajul Lipscani), also known as the Craiova Bazaar (Bazarul Craiovei), is a covered pedestrian passage in the historic center of Craiova. Once a narrow shortcut between commercial properties, it developed into a small bazaar with shops on either side. Its most distinctive feature today is the colorful translucent roof, decorated with patterns inspired by traditional Oltenian carpets.
The passage originated as a dividing space between two private properties in Craiova’s old commercial district. As Lipscani Street grew increasingly busy during the 19th and early 20th centuries, pedestrians began using the space as a shortcut. Despite attempts by the property owners to restrict access with wooden gates, the route became an established passageway. During the communist period, it was developed into a covered bazaar with small shops, including a consignment store known for selling goods that were otherwise difficult to obtain.
After decades of deterioration, the passage was renovated in 2016 as part of the wider revitalization of Craiova’s historic center. The improvements included new paving and a translucent roof with colorful patterns that filter daylight into the narrow space below. Historical photographs displayed along the walls recall the city’s commercial past, while the passage retains its small shops and pedestrian character.
