Dacia Square (Piața Daciei) is the main public square in central Buzău, stretching out in front of the historic Communal Palace. It is a large pedestrian plaza surrounded by shops, cultural venues, and administrative buildings, and serves as a gathering place for public celebrations, festivals, and other events.
The present square was developed during the 1970s as part of a major redevelopment of Buzău’s city center, which also introduced the House of Culture, Hotel Pietroasa, and the Dacia department store. Its original design featured an extensive granite-paved surface decorated with geometric patterns inspired by traditional embroidery from the Buzău region. Between 2022 and 2023, the square underwent a complete renovation that retained the decorative paving concept while introducing new landscaping, fountains, and pedestrian facilities.
Today, the square has an open layout with light and dark granite paving, five ornamental fountains, benches, and planted areas with trees. The Communal Palace, with its elaborate facade and clock tower, provides the historic backdrop, while the surrounding buildings include Hotel Pietroasa, the House of Culture, and the former Dacia department store, now the Winmarkt shopping center. The broad paved area is used for outdoor concerts, seasonal markets, exhibitions, and public gatherings.
In front of the Communal Palace stands the Monument to the Heroes of the 1989 Revolution, created in 1990 by sculptor Tudor Ioan Șerban. Its abstract composition commemorates the 47 people from Buzău who lost their lives during the Romanian Revolution, whose names are inscribed on its red marble base. Another monument commemorates the Peasants’ Revolt of 1907, recalling the unrest that also affected villages in the Buzău region.
