The Central Market (Piața Centrală) is the main food market in Buzău, located in the city center near the Holy Angels Church. Officially named after former mayor Stan Săraru, it is a traditional market where local farmers and traders sell fresh produce and other food products.
The market was developed between 1934 and 1935 as part of an urban modernization program initiated by Mayor Stan Săraru. To create a modern food market, the municipality acquired and cleared properties in the area and commissioned architect Duiliu Marcu to design the complex. The original development included a purpose-built meat and fish hall, providing dedicated facilities for food trading in the growing city.
Today, the market consists of a large covered trading area with rows of stalls selling seasonal vegetables, fruit, herbs, and other agricultural products. Alongside produce brought in by local farmers, traders offer a wider selection of foodstuffs throughout the year. Meat, fish, and dairy products are sold in dedicated commercial spaces, while smaller shops and food vendors operate around the market. The market is particularly busy in the mornings, when residents come to shop and traders arrange their fresh produce for the day.
