Râșnov Fortress (Cetatea Râșnov) is a medieval hilltop fortress in Râșnov, overlooking the town from a rocky ridge above the historic center. The large walled complex is one of the main attractions in Râșnov and offers wide views across the Bârsa region and the surrounding mountains.
The fortress developed as a refuge for the local community rather than as a residence for a ruler or noble family. Its oldest surviving structures date from the 14th century, and the first written mention comes from 1335, when the fortress resisted a Tatar attack that devastated much of the surrounding area. During later invasions, inhabitants of Râșnov could retreat behind the walls with food, possessions and livestock and remain there until the danger had passed.
Over the following centuries, the interior grew into a small fortified settlement. Houses and storage rooms lined the enclosure, while a school and chapel allowed daily life to continue during longer periods of refuge. The irregular walls follow the shape of the hill and were reinforced with towers and bastions, with the main approach protected on the more accessible eastern side.
A second enclosure below the main citadel provided additional space for livestock and supplies. The remains of a medieval Gothic chapel still stand in this outer area, while the Báthory Tower and sections of the surrounding defenses show how the entrance to the fortress was protected.
One of the biggest challenges for anyone sheltering inside was access to water. After a siege in 1612 exposed this weakness, a deep well was dug inside the fortress between 1623 and 1640, reaching around 146 meters into the rock. A later legend claimed that two Turkish prisoners carried out the work in return for their freedom, although historical records instead mention specialist craftsmen hired to dig the shaft.
Râșnov continued to use the fortress as a place of refuge into the 18th century, after which its defensive role gradually declined. Fires, earthquakes and long periods without regular use damaged many of the buildings inside, while later restoration work preserved and rebuilt parts of the fortifications.
The inner citadel is currently closed during restoration works, but visitors can still enter the outer garden and reach parts of the fortified approach, including the medieval chapel remains and the Báthory Tower. The elevated position also provides broad views over Râșnov and the mountain landscape around the town.
Râșnov Fortress cannot be reached directly by car. A large parking area along Strada Cetății, on the southern side of the hill, provides the main road access, with visitors continuing uphill either on foot or by the tourist train. From central Râșnov, the fortress can also be reached by a steep walking path on the western slope or by taking the Râșnov Fortress Funicular.
