New Saint Nicholas Church (Biserica Sfântul Nicolae Nouă) is a historic Orthodox church in Râșnov, built between 1875 and 1878 to provide a larger place of worship for the town’s growing Romanian Orthodox community.
By the middle of the 19th century, the medieval Old Saint Nicholas Church had become too small for the congregation, even after earlier enlargements. The new church was therefore constructed on a larger scale nearby, following plans by architect Gertner and with Andrei Weber responsible for the building work. It retained the same dedication to Saint Nicholas as the old church and was consecrated on September 1, 1886 by Miron Romanul, Metropolitan of Transylvania.
The interior centers on a spacious nave beneath a circular Byzantine-style dome, flanked by side apses. In the winter of 1885, Brașov painter Mișu Popp decorated the wooden iconostasis, including the principal icons of Christ, the Virgin and Child, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas. The rest of the church received a new painted decoration in 1929 by Ioan Cabadaev.
The church remains an active parish church and continues the Saint Nicholas dedication that had served Râșnov’s Orthodox community for centuries. A procession around the church has been part of the Saint Nicholas feast celebrations since at least 1890 and continues today.
