The Evangelical Church of Făgăraș (Biserica Evanghelică din Făgăraș) is a historic Lutheran church in Piața Republicii, in the center of Făgăraș. The present building was constructed between 1841 and 1843 in a Neoclassical style, replacing an earlier church on the same site.
The new church was built during the pastorate of Andreas Wellmann with substantial financial support from Carl von Brukenthal, then head of the Făgăraș district and a descendant of the well-known Brukenthal family. Designed as a spacious hall church, it reflects the simpler, more restrained architecture favored by many Protestant communities in the 19th century.
Several furnishings from earlier churches were preserved and incorporated into the present building. These include a Baroque pulpit canopy, a baptismal font, three epitaphs and a statue of the Apostle Paul. The church also contains an organ built in 1878 by Wilhelm Hörbiger, while a second late 18th-century organ and a reading desk were transferred here from the Evangelical church in Felmer in 1995.
The three epitaphs in the entrance area provide an additional glimpse into the history of Făgăraș’s German-speaking community, including memorials connected with local craftsmen and a pharmacist. Together with the surviving older furnishings, they preserve traces of the Lutheran congregation that worshiped on this site before the present church was built.
