The Bușteni-Babele-Peștera Cable Car (Telecabina Bușteni-Babele-Peștera) is a two-section cable-car system crossing the Bucegi Mountains between Bușteni in the Prahova Valley, the high plateau at Babele, and Peștera on the western side of the mountains. Unlike a conventional route that simply climbs from a lower station to a summit, Babele is the highest point of the journey, with one cable car climbing steeply from Bușteni and a second descending toward Peștera.
The Bușteni-Babele section is the longer and more dramatic of the two. Opened in 1978, it covers around 4.35 kilometers and climbs more than 1,200 meters from Bușteni to the Bucegi Plateau in roughly 11-13 minutes. The cabins rise high above the Jepilor Valley, with increasingly wide views across the surrounding cliffs and mountains before reaching Babele at around 2,200 meters above sea level.
These are large standing cabins rather than the small seated gondolas found on newer systems such as the Sinaia Gondola. Passengers board together and the cabin can become quite crowded when filled close to capacity, so the experience is less private and views depend partly on where you manage to stand. The relatively limited capacity also means queues can build quickly during busy periods, particularly on summer weekends and holidays. Waiting for the descent from Babele can be especially lengthy later in the day, so it is worth allowing plenty of time rather than planning around the final departures.
From Babele, a separate cable car continues westward to Peștera. This section opened in 1984 and runs for around 2.5 kilometers, descending approximately 560 meters from the plateau. Peștera provides a very different access point from Bușteni, as the surrounding area can also be reached by road from the Dâmbovița side of the Bucegi Mountains.
The system is useful both as sightseeing transport and as a way of reaching the high mountain trails without making the long climb on foot. Babele gives direct access to the Sphinx, the Babele rock formations and hiking routes across the plateau, while the Peștera side connects with the western Bucegi area. The two sections can be used independently, so visitors do not need to travel all the way from Bușteni to Peștera unless that suits their route.
Cable-car operation is sensitive to mountain weather, particularly strong winds, and services can be delayed or suspended when conditions become unsuitable. The operator also uses different operating patterns across the year, especially on the Babele-Peștera section, so exact schedules and current ticket arrangements are best checked with the operator before setting out.
