The Flămânda Church (Biserica Flămânda) is a Romanian Orthodox church in Bucharest that is dedicated to Saint Haralambie and to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
There is little documentation about the history of the church and the most reliable source seems to be the inscription above the entrance door. According to the text on this pisanie, which was installed after a restoration in 1871, a wooden church existed before the current edifice. The church, built in 1766 by someone named Dimitrie didn’t exist for long, as the construction of the masonry of the current church began in 1782. However, according to the same inscription, the construction encountered several difficulties and just before it was finished, a storm blew off its spire roof on 17 September 1794. With the help of the tailors’ guild and funds from the treasury fund of Alexandru Moruzi the church was finally finished around 1800.
In the 19th century, the tailors’ guild helped with decorating the church with gilded silver icons, holy vessels, crosses and other items. Despite the growing population of Bucharest, the number of believers attending the church barely reached 150 so the church survived off a yearly subsidy of 3000 lei from the state.
