The Slobozia Church (Biserica Slobozia) is a Romanian Orthodox church in Bucharest that is dedicated to the Great Martyr Saint Demetrius.
The church was built by Radu Leon between 1664 and 1667 near a stone cross that his father Leon TomÈ™a had placed between 1629 and 1632. The stone commemorates the victory of Leon TomÈ™a’s army over that of Aga Matei on 23 August 1631. The fallen victims of the battle are buried around the cross.
The church was originally built on a rectangular plan but was later enlarged and rounded by Treasurer Constantin Năsturel Herescu in 1743. The current classical look is the result of a series of modifications that took place during the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the additions were the large arches in the interior and the classicist elements on the facades.
