The Saint Joseph Cathedral of Bucharest (Catedrala Sfântul Iosif din București) is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in central Bucharest.
The cathedral was built between 1873 and 1884 following the plans of the Viennese architects Friedrich Schmidt and Carol Benesch and its inauguration took place on 15 February 1884. During earthquakes in 1929, 1940, 1977, 1986, and 1990, and the 1944 bombings, the cathedral suffered significant damage but was restored every time.
The architectural style can be described as historicism with Romanesque and Gothic elements. The church measures a length of 40 meters and a width of 22 meters. The main altar was made in Rome with white marble from Carrara and the woodwork of the ceiling came from Brașov. The original organ was brought from Paris in 1892 but was replaced by a new organ from Timișoara in 1930.
The Saint Joseph Cathedral of Bucharest is dedicated to Saint Joseph and to the Virgin Mary and celebrates yearly on March 19th. It is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bucharest.
