The Lutheran Church of Bucharest (Biserica Luterană din București) is an Evangelical church of the Augustan Confession, located in central Bucharest.
The church was built between 1851 and 1853 following the plans of the German architect A. Mohnbach. The church has an Eclectic style, with elements of other styles including Neo-Gothic, Romanesque, Neo-Renaissance, and Byzantine, which makes the church stand out. It’s the only church built in this way in Bucharest. To build the church, funds were collected from donors including Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, Prince Gheorge Bibescu of Wallachia, and King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. At the time of completion, the 36-meter-high church was the tallest building in Bucharest.
In 1912, a fire caused severe damage to the Lutheran Church of Bucharest, after which restoration works took place. At this time the bells and the clock in the tower were installed. The church suffered further damage during the earthquake of 1940, the bombings of 1944-1945, the major earthquake of 1977, and the smaller earthquakes of 1986 and 1990. After each of these events, basic restorations were done, but in 2007 the most extensive restoration project in the history of the church was started.
