The Linden Tree Inn (Hanul cu Tei) is one of the few remaining traditional inns in the historic old town of Bucharest. It is located between the famous Strada Lipscani and Strada Blănari.
The complex was constructed in 1833 by Anastasie Hagi Gheorghe Polizu and Ștefan Popovici, who each owned 14 shops in the building, while sharing the guardian’s room and the pedestian alley. The Linden Tree Inn is the only one of the remaining inns that still maintains its original shape and appearance.
Strada Lipscani was an important trading street at that time and the shops in the Linden Tree Inn were rented to merchants, while the inn provided lodging and food to the ones traveling from other cities.
Nowadays, the complex houses several art workshops and galleries, a conference hall, and a bar located in the underground cellars. It’s nice to walk through the alley and relive the old times while observing the historic facades. Both entrances have richly ornamented iron gates and above the Strada Blănari entrance you can see the engraved initials of the original owners “A.P. and S.P.”
