The Semenic-Caraș Gorge National Park (Parcul Național Semenic-Cheile Carașului) is a protected area in Caraș-Severin County in the historical Banat region in the south-west of Romania.
Weather & Climate
Semenic-Caraș Gorge National Park is a massive karst region defined by the deep, winding Caraș River canyon and the sprawling, high-altitude Semenic plateau. Because the park transitions from deep, humid gorges at lower elevations to high, wind-exposed meadows, it experiences a significant microclimate variation that keeps the canyons lush and cool while the plateau remains open and breezy.
Summer (June-August): The plateau is a refreshing escape, with temperatures averaging 18°C to 22°C, perfect for scenic driving and photography. Down in the deep canyons, the air feels slightly more humid and shaded, staying a comfortable 20°C to 24°C. It is the prime season for exploring the forest trails and the area’s many caves.
Spring and Autumn: These are seasons of soft light and lush growth. Spring brings vibrant wildflower blooms to the Semenic plateau by May, with mild temperatures near 14°C to 17°C. October is fantastic for foliage viewing, with cooler, crisp days averaging 10°C to 14°C, ideal for long drives through the park’s diverse terrain.
Winter (December-March): The high Semenic plateau often sees heavy snow, creating a popular local winter landscape with temperatures typically between -5°C and 2°C. While the roads to the plateau are generally maintained for visitors, they can become very icy so winter tires are essential. The lower gorge areas remain more sheltered and are beautiful for quiet winter photography, though always plan for snow and ice on the winding mountain passes.
