Alba County is one of the 41 counties (județe) of Romania. It is located in the Center development region and it is part of the historical region of Transylvania. Alba is surrounded by the counties of Cluj, Mureș, Sibiu, Vâlcea, Hunedoara, Arad, and Bihor. Alba Iulia is the largest city and capital of Alba County.
Weather & Climate
Alba County features a diverse landscape, transitioning from the rugged, limestone-rich peaks of the Apuseni Mountains in the west to the rolling, verdant hills of the Transylvanian Plateau in the east. This significant vertical variation creates a layered continental climate, where warm river valleys sit just a short distance from cooling, high-altitude alpine corridors.
In the summer, the lower valley regions are warm and sun-drenched, with temperatures typically ranging from 26°C to 29°C, while the higher mountain altitudes offer a refreshing, temperate escape of 17°C to 21°C. Transition seasons are consistently mild and pleasant throughout the county, with average temperatures of 11°C to 18°C, providing ideal windows for visiting both urban historic sites and remote nature trails.
Regional contrasts are most evident in winter: while the central urban areas near Alba Iulia remain relatively cool, hovering around -1°C to 2°C, the western Apuseni peaks experience significant snowfall and sustained sub-zero temperatures. Visitors should prepare for deep winter conditions when heading toward mountain resorts. During warmer months, the diverse terrain is best navigated with layers, as the climate can shift rapidly between the sun-warmed valleys and the cooling mountain heights.
