The Saint Nicholas Church (Biserica Sfântul Nicolae) is an Eastern Orthodox church in Vaslui, built between 1939 and 1943 for a parish established beside the city’s military barracks. The church was initiated by parish priest Dumitru Lapteș and supported by local residents, public authorities and several prominent contributors.
The parish had been established in 1934, and land for the church was obtained from the officers’ and non-commissioned officers’ association of the Vaslui garrison. The site was consecrated in November 1937, while construction began in April 1939 and continued through the early years of the Second World War. General Ion Rășcanu and Marshal Ion Antonescu were among those who contributed to the project, while Vaslui-born actor Constantin Tănase donated the church bells. The completed church was consecrated on 26 September 1943 by Grigorie Leu, Bishop of Huși.
The church was built of brick on stone foundations and retains a carved iconostasis by L. Oancea. Its interior was painted by Ion Enescu, while the iconostasis includes 19th-century icons preserved from an earlier collection. Some other historic objects formerly belonging to the church are kept at the diocesan museum in Huși.
A long period of repairs and structural consolidation followed in the late 20th century, including major work between 1992 and 2002. Further rehabilitation and improvements were carried out in the following years, preserving the church as the center of the Saint Nicholas parish.
