The Saint George’s Church (Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe) is an Eastern Orthodox church in the old center of Bârlad, built between 1810 and 1818 on the site of an earlier church damaged by the earthquake of 1802. The present building was erected with the support of the local abager merchants’ guild, which helped finance its reconstruction.
The church has a trefoil plan with three towers, stone foundations and thick masonry walls of brick and stone. Inside, the original limewood iconostasis survives from the early 19th century, decorated with carved foliage, small columns and interlaced motifs. Several of its principal icons are older and were covered with silver decoration during the 1840s.
A separate gate and bell tower was added between 1856 and 1858 through the initiative of Ioniță Bardaș, known as Titinaș. Built by mason Mihai Popoiu, the tower was designed with a passage at ground level and a room above it, and is still known locally as Turnul lui Titinaș.
The church was used as a garrison church from 1927 and suffered serious damage in the 1940 earthquake. After a period of closure in the communist era, it reopened for worship in 1970. A major restoration carried out between 2019 and 2023 consolidated the building, rebuilt the porch and towers, renewed the roof and restored the bell tower.
