The Monument to the Heroes of the Nation (Monumentul Eroilor Neamului) is a war memorial in the Cerbul de Aur area of Bârlad, dedicated to Romanian soldiers who died during the First and Second World Wars. It was created by sculptor Constantin Crengăniș and unveiled in 2019.
The monument was commissioned after proposals from veterans’ and commemorative organizations, with Crengăniș’s design selected through a competition. It was formally unveiled on 26 June 2019, Romania’s National Flag Day.
The bronze sculpture is about 3 meters high and 1.7 meters wide and stands on a pedestal around 4 meters high. Crengăniș shaped the composition around the image of a flame, inspired by the oil lamp used during prayers for those who had died at the front, instead of depicting a conventional military scene with soldiers and weapons.
