Former Deșteptarea People’s Bank (Fosta Bancă Populară Deșteptarea) is a historic bank building in central Bârlad, created for a cooperative credit institution founded to serve local residents at the beginning of the 20th century. The bank was established with the involvement of Grigore D. Vasiliu, an important figure in Bârlad’s early cooperative banking movement.
The surviving headquarters dates from the late 19th or early 20th century and stood at the corner of Strada Constantin Hamangiu and today’s Bulevardul Republicii. The institution provided a local alternative to larger commercial banks at a time when cooperative credit organizations were expanding across Romania.
The building has a compact corner composition with rendered façades, regularly spaced windows, decorative surrounds and a strongly defined cornice. Its restrained design reflects the smaller scale of the institution compared with the more monumental banking headquarters built for national financial organizations.
