The Bârlad Trade Unions’ House of Culture – George Tutoveanu (Casa de Cultură a Sindicatelor „George Tutoveanu”) is a cultural center in Bârlad, created as a major venue for performances, exhibitions, lectures and amateur artistic activities. Opened in 1971, it brought several forms of cultural activity together under one roof and became an important part of the city’s postwar cultural life.
The building was inaugurated on 4 April 1971, replacing an earlier cultural institution that had already operated in Bârlad for more than two decades. It was designed around a 488-seat performance hall, accompanied by a 150-seat conference room, a library and smaller rooms for clubs and creative groups. Its opening program brought together choirs, orchestras, dancers, reciters and other amateur performers from across the city.
From its first years, the house of culture hosted concerts, theater and film screenings alongside exhibitions, literary meetings, lectures and educational courses. A popular university also operated within the building, offering subjects ranging from foreign languages to medicine and preparation for higher education.
The institution later took the name of George Tutoveanu, the Bârlad poet and teacher. It is still used for cultural events and also houses a library, literary circles, music and dance activities, children’s theater and other community groups.
