The Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel (Biserica Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil) is a Romanian Orthodox church in Șura Mare, Sibiu County. Completed in 2019, it was built to serve a growing Orthodox community after the village’s older church had become too small for the number of worshippers.
A second Orthodox parish was established in Șura Mare in 2012, and a temporary chapel was soon created in the center of the village. On February 17, 2013, the chapel was blessed and the foundation stone was laid for a much larger permanent church dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Construction of the new building began in 2014.
The church was designed on a trefoil cross plan, with two side apses, a third apse forming the altar, a central dome above the nave and twin bell towers over the entrance. Its interior provides roughly 280-300 square meters of usable space, making it considerably larger than the older parish church it was intended to supplement.
By 2018 the main structure had been completed and roofed, and the bells and crosses for the towers were consecrated in April of that year. The finished church was formally consecrated on November 8, 2019, the feast of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, when the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated inside.
The church remains the home of Șura Mare II parish and forms a striking modern counterpart to the medieval fortified church standing across the road.
