Corneliu Coposu Square (Piața Corneliu Coposu) is the main modern civic square of Mediaș, immediately outside the medieval center and in front of the current City Hall.
The square developed as a new civic center during the postwar transformation of Mediaș, shifting many administrative and public functions beyond the old fortified core. Its broad open space is framed by several of the major buildings created as part of this newer center, including the City Hall, the Trade Unions’ House of Culture and Hotel Central. Together they form a distinctly modern counterpart to King Ferdinand I Square, the historic marketplace inside the old town.
The square became an important gathering place during the Romanian Revolution in December 1989, when residents assembled outside the City Hall as communist authority collapsed. Speeches were delivered from the building, communist symbols were removed, and the crowd became directly involved in the formation of the new local leadership. Unlike several Romanian cities where the revolution turned violent, the transfer of authority in Mediaș took place without major bloodshed.
The square was later named after Corneliu Coposu, a leading Romanian politician and former political prisoner who became one of the most prominent opponents of communism and an important figure in the country’s democratic transition after 1989.
Today, the paved plaza is regularly used for city celebrations, concerts, fairs and seasonal events, keeping it at the center of public life in Mediaș.
